Are you looking to start challenging yourself in more dynamic ocean conditions? Under the guidance of our experienced instructional team you can kayak at the world-famous Skookumchuck Tidal Rapid, challenging yourself at a level that is comfortable to you!
This 3-day course will introduce you into an ocean environment with current and waves. Maximum daily current speeds range from 5-8 knots. Students are NOT required to paddle at maximum current speeds and are encouraged to challenge themselves at a level that is comfortable but exciting for them. This course is designed for those that have acquired capsize recovery, edging, bracing and rolling skills and are looking to practice these skills in a dynamic but safe environment.
If your rolling is not a consolidated skill it does not preclude you from taking this course it just means you might get less on-water time due to extra energy expenditure in recovering from a capsize.
We keep our ratio of instructor to students at 1:2 to ensure a very comfortable and safe learning environment for our students.
In this course you will be introduced to and practice the following skills:
•Reading moving water
• Crossing an eddy line
• Stability and boat control in current and waves
• Capsize and re-entry in current and waves
• Surfing skills
• And much more!
This course will be up to 6 hours of on-water instruction each day, depending on your energy level. Once we have paddled to the tidal rapid from the town of Egmont, B.C., it is up to you how much time you would like to spend in your kayak that day. There will also be roughly 2 hours of dry-land instruction the first two days, including video analysis, a review of the day and preview of tomorrow.
Accommodation can be arranged anywhere in Egmont based on your needs. The course will run on-land from the Strongwater Campground, where Tent, RV and Cabin sites are available.
