Race Commentary:
There was a buzz in the air for the first race of September. It was my first race in 3 weeks and I was happy to get back in the water in Deep Cove after paddling in the US Surf Ski Championships in San Francisco. I stayed with Team THINK captained by Daryl Remmler. Locals, Rod Hope, Corky Armstrong, Chris Dobrovolny, Warren Bruce and Gareth Tudor-Jones also took part. We were down there a few days in advance to get used to the conditions which have a reputation of being notorious. All in all it was great trip and the race lived up to its billing. A challenging course that had everything from tumultuous tidal currents, ocean swell, big winds and ripping downwind conditions. Team THINK did well with some of its international racers placing in the top ten. BTW this race had some of the best paddlers in the world participating. The THINK Uno proved it could compete with the best.
Tuesday Night Race
The season is winding down. Weather and paddling conditions are still great but we are losing the evening light each week. Last night's sunset was spectacular. We still have 2 more races so make sure you come out and participate while you still can. September 15 will be the season's double surf ski and kayak championship, so grab a partner and get out.
There were about 7 double surf skis out last night, so the pace off the start was fast. I was paddling my new Fenn Elite double ski with Deep Cove Kayak Instructor Mike Darbyshire. Mike has never raced before but is a solid member of our kayak instructional team. BTW our kayak instructional team is quickly gaining a reputation as being the best in Canada. I didn't know what to expect from Mike as there were many good doubles teams out there, but I was pleasantly surprised to finish as the 2nd double. The Fenn Elite is certainly a super fast double. Just when I thought we were falling off the pace we managed to jump back on. Mike D was solid, and did an amazing job for his first kayak race.
Both Chris Dobrovolny and Warren Bruce had stepped up from there Evo and V10 Sport respectively to a THINK Uno and V10. Their results were solid. Chris hung with the front pack which was being pulled along by Gareth TJ and US National Team member Dion Maxwell (both in THINK Legends) Also taking a long turn at the front was Jeff/Katja (Fenn XT) together with Ben/John (S2X) So for Chris to hang with this group was a major accomplishment. We all know it was the boat that did it. A bit back Warren Bruce was battling it out with veteran paddler Ken Stannick. Despite Ken's limited time for training, he has had an outstanding season. So when rookie Warren Bruce held Ken off to the finish it was a major upset for Ken, Big accomplishment for Warren.
Micky McDonald gave a solid thrashing to Rod Hope Sam Mottram and Rene Cheung who were battling in there group of 3. Nothing like a 3 way sprint finish to push the HR threshold!!
Used Boat Sale
We will have the list posted soon. There are some great deals. Both our rental THINK Evos are spoken for and we will be adding the V10 Sports to the for sale list. Keep an eye on the "What's New" bulletin board on the front page of our web-site.
If you are considering ordering a surf ski for 2010 especially a carbon version, THINK or Epic, now is the time.
