Have I mentioned that the Tuesday Night Paddlesport Race is North America's LARGEST!! Maybe I haven't so I thought I would say so again.A start studded cast made up tonight's TNR. Eric Moll from Bellingham was in town just back from his victorious paddle at Bellingham's famous Ski to Sea Race. Eric whooped some other slouches like, Ian Mackenzie, Brandon Nelson, Wes Hammer, and others. So it was a notable victory. Wes Hammer of off Canada's National Team was in town for a hiatus before returning to Halifax for more training. It was "every other Tuesday" so that meant Gareth Tudor-Jones was here to kick some butt. Congrats to Gareth's little bro, David, who placed 7th at Molokai last week. Also making his debut at Tuesday night race on a Pimped Up V10 was Beijing Olympian Zach Plavsic. Zach is a windsurfer who likes to cross train with surf skis. Zach is recovering from a busted leg and his re-hab has mostly been guzzling beer. Team BC Biathlon was out. Ken and Jen Stannick were out paddling in a canoe to celebrate Jen's 29th birthday. The come-back kid Andrea Cassulis was back in the saddle racing with hubby Gary after recovering from a nagging injury.
So the battles were set and Wes Hammer, paddling his THINK Uno, was out to get some revenge against Eric Moll and that's how the race started. It was going to be a long one in preparation for Round Bowen. 10km to Twin Island and back and the short course 5 km long. Immediately a lead group of Jim Nosella, Gareth TJ, Eric M and Wes Hammer was created. Followed by the usual hangers on. The pace seemed civilized. I started to move my way to the front of the second group paddling beside Jonathan Sy who had just finished a hard weekend of racing OC6 and surf ski. Needless to say he was bit spent. Off to the side John George was working by himself and Katja and Jeff were ahead doing the same. About half-way to Lone Rock Jim N. fell off the pace on the front group and we quickly closed the gap. We were approaching the light at LR Point and I was trying to bridge up to John G. We rounded the light and I felt my paddle blade hit bottom, Oh Oh!..CRUNCH!!! as my rudder hit the rock. My foot pedals went slack and I could feel the stern of my surf ski skidding sideways. And to quote my favourite U.S. intellect…"Doooh" The guys asked me if I was OK. And it was here I determined I would be doing the short course. Maybe a first place!! But Jim Nosella was ahead. Then Jodi Boates passed me. With no steering other than leaning my ski and sweep turns, I was paddling like a drunk walking home after closing time. Or just like Daryl last night.
Karly and Kim at the finish line informed us that unless we go back out and round the marker on the south side of The Cove we would be disqualified. "Doooh" I reminded here I was her employer and could fire her. She was unfased. So Gregan Dunn paddling his THINK Fit with matching ball cap was the first paddler to complete the course. Many others, including myself, played follow the leader despite a map and a verbal course description. C'est Dommage! Zannen Desu Ne! I marked the first few as DSQ but Jodi B, Kristin Bauder and Kiran Basra paddled back out and went around the mark on their cool down. The rest of you know who you are. Results are a bit screwed up due to half the field not following the course.
So the rest of the commentary is hear say from the Raven. I took all speeds and distances and divided by 5. Mike Fitz and Cam made some crafty current calculations and made up 500m…no that's 100m on the rest of the group. Somewhere near the finish 2.5 km…no wait 500m the leader put the Wes Hammer down and out sprinted Gareth and Eric.
Hope you can join us at our Deep Cove Demo Day on Saturday 10 - 3
