What a beautiful night. Be sure to check out Viv's photos. The start line was conjested for the Criterium Race. There was bumping and crashing as everybody jockeyed for position. If you are just starting the Tuesday Night Races don't be discouraged by the speed. The average speed of the racers is getting faster and faster. So if you stick with it you too will get faster.
There are a few ways to get faster:
- Improve your technique
There is more to stroke technique than simply putting the paddle in the water and pulling hard. Refining your stroke technique is a work in progress. Last Monday some of the top Tuesday Night paddlers attended a training session with French National Team member Jean Rillard. These are guys who have solid forward strokes themselves. So if you are just starting there is lots to learn. You can start off by reading my article on Core Paddling. The article is a compilation of interesting tips I have learned from a variety of more experienced coaches. But don't stop there. Deep Cove Canoe & Kayak Centre(DCCKC) offers Forward Stroke Efficiency Clinics, here we use a variety of exercises and drills to help refine your technique. Your not done yet. Develop a good mental image of what the forward stroke should look like. You Tube has lots of great clips of great paddlers, like Canadian Olympian Adam Vankouverden. More Clinics...DCCKC is hoping to be hosting clinics by Olympic Gold Medalist Greg Barton. Greg is hoping to compete in the Round Bowen Race and we will schedule some clinics around that time.
- Improve your fitness
Paddling will make you fitter. Proper stroke technique will ensure the proper conditioning of the rights parts of your body. We essentially are marathon paddlers. You will see greater improvement in your results if you add more training sessions per week. You will not see much improvement if you only participate in the weekly TNR. Just ask Micky who put in a couple of sessions over the weekend and managed to cross the finish line in front of arch rival Warren Bruce.
- Fast Paddles
Fast gear only works if you know how to use it. Refer back to #1. In the right hands a wing blade paddles will help you go faster. They also help refine your stroke as a wing blade wants to move through the water in a way that helps develop core rotation. Used incorrectly and a wing blade will be the same as a regular paddle. A purchase of a wing blade should be combined with improving your stroke technique.
- Fast Boats
Without a doubt a fiberglass boat is faster than a plastic boat, a narrower/long boat is faster than a wide/short boat. Providing that you have the balance to paddle the narrower boat. Balance is a "learned skill" and you can develop it over time. Come out and test the next level boat out in a non-competitive environment. We rent surf skis for all abilities, Epic's 18X is a great fast sea kayak, THINK's Fit hybrid surf ski is another great option. Check out Gregan Dunn's results as he paddle's the THINK Fit . DCCKC offers Learn to Surf Ski Clinics every second Monday. The new fitness kayaks allow you to more fully use your whole body, core and legs,to power the boat. Sea kayaks have their purpose limit your range of motion while paddling.
Wes Hammer participated in last night's race. Wes is one of the top K1 paddlers in Canada and is from Maple Ridge but is now studying and training in Nova Scotia. He brought along Doug who coaches at the Pitt Meadows Paddling Club. Doug was paddling a flat water sprint C1 canoe. Simply balancing in one of these high kneel canoes is a fit that is beyond 99% fo the paddling population. These are incredibly difficult boats to paddle. Imagine kneeling in the lunge position for 30 minutes on the most unstable platform you could imagine. Your talking about serious core strength. Doug made it look easy.
Many of you race pass holders are not checking in. You are making it difficult for the time keepers to check your time. You are also moving numbers around from various boats and or have numbers on your boats from other races. If you have purchased a season race pass then you need to check in every week. If you normally paddle a single and decide to paddle a double you need to inform the check in people. If you loan your boat with your number on the boat to somebody else the paddlers need to check in otherwise we will assume you are paddlng the boat. If you have your own boat and recieved a stick on number you still need to pay your $3 each week. If you receive a paper number please remove it from your boat after the race and return it to the office. Your cooperation in these areas will help us provide more accurate results.
The weekend there is the Jericho Small Boat Race OC1 OC2 and Surf Skis on May 24.
