Course Route: To the entrance of Bedwell Bay and Back
Course Length: About 5 km
Description:
80 paddlers again. Many were tired from Sunday's 19 km Tour de Indian Arm. You could feel the lactate acid still in the muscles.
Thanks to those who responded to my readership survey. I have determined that my readership consists of 3 people. Thanks Mom for letting me know you read race write-ups each week, and yes I will schedule the Tour de Indian Arm on a different day next year.
So I have noticed that many people sit on shore until moments before the race and then paddle out to the start line. Aging endurance athletes... Yes I am noticing that many of us are aging, should liken ourselves to Diesel Engines which need a good warm up and a good cool down. If I have time to warm-up, which I didn't last night, this is what I will do.
What I discovered from participating in Jodi Boates' great spin classes, is that as you warm up you hit areas of uncomfort or resistance as you move up into a different heart rate zones. I find that after a bit I will settle into that zone and then I can move up to the next level. So you can start the race cold and spend the first part of your race moving through these various levels of uncomfort, 70% of max, 80% of max etc, or you can warm up the diesel engine prior to the race and be fully ready to go at the start.
Prior to the race I will paddle around slowly getting the joints working while exaggerating my stroke and range of motion. Working on technique, 10 - 15 minutes, Then I will pick up the pace and watching my HR monitor push up to about 75% - 80%. This takes about 3 - 5-minutes. Here I can feel I am starting to warm-up. Usually the race starts with a sprint, so I like to hit this HR level a couple of times before the race. I will do a couple of pick-ups or light sprints where I will hit 85%. These will last for about 30 - 45 seconds and maybe I will do 3 - 5. Finally I will do a couple of full out efforts that would mimic a race start. 15 - 20 seconds and I might do 2 - 3 of these. By the time I finish this I will want to have a light sweat going.
Timing of these is important because now I want it to be about 1 - 2 minutes before the race time. Any longer and you will cool-down
More people are paddling double skis and seem to be having fun. It helps people become more competitive and it is fun to work together. Last night the Hope Bros. Were at it in DCCKC's double ski. Jodi Boates and Katja Rademacher have joined to make a formidable women's doubles crew and Marshall House and Curtis Brock are working together each week.
Many people are intimidated by surf skis but the Double Fenn Mako XT is very stable and is a great way to test out surf ski paddling. Most sea kayakers can jump right into the double Fenn and feel comfortable. My advice is to stick to Deep Cove until such a time as you feel really stable. The only problem is that we only have one and people tend to book it for the race. Why not rent it on another occasion like the weekend and then once you have tried it in a low stress situation then book it for the race.
Gary Cassulis put the hurt on Cypress's Tuesday Night Cross-Country Ski Race organizer Bruno Bagneres. Bruno has a thing or two to learn about kayak racing but put him on some classic xc skis and not many people can keep up to him. Carolyn Hubbard was mixing it up with those guys until she fell off her ski 500m from the finish line. Brigid Wong was paddling solo tonight while hubby Brian paddled his new V10L. Brigid who normally paddles double with Brian, showed that she was no slouch by stomping a on couple of Nordic skiers too. Hollyburn Race Team's coach Abi Holt and West Coast Nordics Biathlon Coach were chatting it up trying to figure out to go faster using their arms instead of there legs.
If you are interested in purchasing a double surf ski we will be receiving two just in time for Round Bowen. Fenn Mako XT which is really stable and really fast and Fenn's new Elite double, a tiny bit less stable and super fast. The Fenn Elite has been receiving rave reviews. Both are $4000 USD. The fun thing about the double skis is that you can take Newbies out paddling and let them experience the thrill of surf ski paddling.
