Bob has writer's block so he asked me for some input.
Another really nice night at Deep Cove with sunny blue skies. Long Course was to go between Boulder and Hamber then down to Maple Beach, turn around at the marker and head back. Short Course was around Boulder and back.
I headed out to Boulder for a quick warm up and was greeted with a bit of a head wind on the way out and some easy rollers pushing me back in, so conditions weren't too bad.
The start line was a bit sparse this week, probably due to the Holiday on Wednesday.
I should mention tonight was Magnum PI night; I didn't see any Ferrari's in the parking lot but there were lots of folks dressed up in Hawaiian shirts, thick black moustaches, leis around their neck, etc. I also might have seen someone impersonating Higgins but for fear of this person thinking they looked like Magnum instead I wont mention his name. Great to see everyone get into theme nights.
I lined up on the right side of the course, next to Jodi and Katja (they supported the Magnum theme by dressing in bikini tops & leis, with Katja even wearing a face mask and snorkel !!!). Another superfast start, (they all seem to be like that now) with more and more folks making up the 'elite'
front pack. I tried my best to keep up, but as we turned out of the cove, there was a nice lead pack all bunched together way out ahead of me. The headwind calmed down a bit, but still made you work a bit. Heading to Hamber yielded some folks falling off of the lead pack, myself included. I was pretty much on my own with the fabulous Foellmer twins (in separate skis this week) visible but ahead in the distance.
As I closed in to the turn around marker, a group who were either out to my side or just behind me began passing me. This group consisted of Brian and Trista in their double (who are in awesome shape as they train for a 100 MILE race in September) , Martin R. in his Looksha II riding their wash, And a couple of guys I don't know paddling Evos. I tried my best to stay in front of this pack but as we rounded the mark, either my engine died or these guys kicked it up a notch, but quickly, I was a good 3-4 boat lengths behind them. The rest of the race the things stayed pretty much the same with these folks widening the gap. Coming into the cove, Martin (who did a great job in his kayak) fell behind Brian and Trista's wake but still ahead managed to beat me at the finish line...nice work.
I did want to note that while heading back I did see Bob slightly ahead of me and was wondering if he or I were on the wrong course; back on shore I quickly learned that he had inhaled his fake moustache and was choking. Not to laugh at a man choking but (and glad it wasn't serious), but the video shows him stopping every so often removing bits of black fur from his mouth....lol
Once at the Raven, I got the scoop on the lead pack from Chris D. (who despite his old age and ailing muscles, is having an awesome year allowing him to join the ranks of the super elite paddlers). It appears that he had his pick of double skis to ride behind choosing from Johnny/Andrew, Katja/Jodi and Mike/Cam. Chris indicated that it was a close bunch heading back in with Johnny and Andrew taking the first place silver bullet with Chris 1/2 a boat length behind followed by I think Mike/Cam and then Jodi/Katja. Great video footage of the finish revealed Chris' attempt to put the hammer down on Johnny/Andrew but coming up short....maybe next week.
