Course: Paddle to Jug, Surf Ski Remount, Paddle back to Deep Cove, all kayaks wet exit and remount.
Length: 4.5 km
It was time for the annual remount and self rescue practice and as usual many people displayed a varying levels of skill. I wasn't present to witness the spectacle, but I heard stories. Some paddlers have clearly practiced their remounts…others hadn't. Some who hadn't are very accomplished paddlers and clearly would have been in big trouble had they capsized in rough water.
Nobody ever intends on capsize, and accomplished, more confident people are more likely to test their skills in rougher water, down wind paddles and hence more likely to capsize unintentionally. Remounting a surf ski or re-entering a sea kayak is a "Use it or Lose It" skill and like rolling a kayak if you don't practice it you will get rusty. Practicing your remount should be part of your weekly training program.
