Our "Spring in Summer" sale will be wrapping up on Sunday. It's a great time to take advantage of a 10% discount on a surf ski or composite touring kayak, and 15% off a plastic kayak.
Father's Day is approaching and we have lots of new summer clothing for men. Nice shorts and summer dress shirts by Reef, Prana, and more.
There was an incident where a commercial motor boat was going to plow right through the race in progress. It blasted its horn and didn't alter its speed or course. It was very dangerous. You may want to give the charter company a call and let them know what you think. I did, and they were pretty rude. Magic Charters Cell: 604-250-8008 I also called the Harbour Master to report the incident. 604.665.908 You may want to call them if you have a concern.
Age and Experience over comes Youth and Enthusiasm
So let me set the stage: Last Thursday at the Big Chop I was racing against Chris D. I was pulling away from Chris, but seeing the only person in front of me was Eric Moll and I wasn't going to catch him. I could either paddle the 8 km by myself or I could hang back and torment Chris D and the tandem team of Marshall H and Gary C. Being weak in spirit I opted for the role of tormentor. My strategy would be to hang with those guys and then pull away with Chris in tow, knowing that he couldn't resist trying to hang on. I would proceed to repeat this scenario several times until the final sprint. I figured this would do two things, 1.) Make me feel good about myself. 2.) Help Chris with his work out. I may have forgotten to mention that Chris had already completed a 15 km training paddle prior to the start of the Big Chop. Given that it made my plan particularly evil and cruel. It was fun though!
So last night Young Chris D. was out for some revenge. Being fresh he was going to kick some BP butt. It started off that way. Chris is a good starter and has an awesome sprint. I "hung back"at a distance where I could reel him in at anytime.(this makes it seem like I had a strategy, but in reality I was "hanging-on") About the half way mark it seemed like Chris D. was going to keep his lead, but by some miracle the Hand of God came down and swept Chris off is surf ski. Really it was the wake from the offending booze cruise boat "Magic Charm". Chris was quick to remount his ski but in his haste neglected to grab his paddle. Rule #1 "Never let go of your paddle" I felt really bad for Chris' misfortune, not bad enough to slow down however. This left youngster Ken Stannick up ahead. Ken had been reading up on Hank Macgregor's Molokai domination and how Hank had crushed the pack of 30 of the top surf ski paddlers in the world with a 20 minute pull at 15.5 km/hr. Ken's goal for tonight was to go out for as hard as he could for as long as he could. He did just that, leading the race for the first half. As we crossed from Boulder to Grey Rocks Ken was starting to blow-up and Jeff Raymond took the lead. I was fortunate to have Mike & Cam Fitz to paddle beside, and the dynamic duo was making a great effort to reel Ken in. By the time we got to the entrance of the Cove Ken was riding our wash and Ty Gee had bridged up to us. As we were approaching the finish Fitz's and I were neck and neck. Old Mike Fitz was uttering "Steady, Steady" to his young faithful paddling partner Cam. I decided to make a dash and gain a brief lead but wise Mike stayed Steady Steady and plucked my lead by the finish.
