Race Commentary:
113 Paddlers lined up at the start last night!! That's a 3 year record!!
Short Course: Lone Rock Point and return via south 5 knot can. Some people evidently are not too sure where the South 5 knot can is.
Long Course: LRP > Raccoon Island and south 5 knot can . Surf Skis were required to do a wet start and a dump and remount at the South 5 knot can.
So let me first say that as kayakers here in Vancouver, we spend many months training and paddling in cold and wet conditions. Dreaming of the summer months when the sun and water are warm. Well here it is! This is the weather and the times we lust after for 8 months out of the year. So get out there and paddle. This is the time of the year to be irresponsible. 5 years from now you probably won't remember that day you diligently went to work, but there is a better chance you will remember the day you skipped work and had glorious day of paddling. I also talk to many people who want to learn how to surf ski. They say they will try it when its warmer. Now is the time!! Seize the moment! Get out there and paddle. A small group of us were paddling off Ambleside this morning. Shorts, getting wet, face shots in the waves, pushing the limits in rough water with little or no consequences.
Last night's TNR was a good one. Paddle Only, no team stuff. Nice and simple. The week long BC Biathlon summer training camp built the TNR into its program so there were 30 young athletes, some of the best in the province and nation out training.
Forcing surf ski paddlers to do a remount is a good way to force people to practice some basic survival skills. I saw several people practicing prior to the race. Better to do so now than waiting until you are really tested.
After the remount the race took off at a good pace. Doubles teams of Jeff and Katja, Ben and John G (re-united after a long separation) were no where to be seen. It's a bit more challenging to remount and get going. The lead group of Chris D, Terry L, and Ty G + Bob were setting the pace. Ty was pushing off the front and everybody was content to sit back. After passing the marina Jeff/Katja were off to their rightful place at the front of the field. Halfway to LRP Ty pulled over and I took a pull at the front. As we rounded the mark at LRP I went wide not wanting to repeat my rudder busting mistake of a few weeks back. This is where Ben/John passed us and Chris D. left me to join the faster ride. It was clear that he wasn't going to be able to keep up with Ben/John but he still forced the group to make a hard push. I fell to the back with Terry and Ty trading places behind Chris. It was a bit choppy but all the waves seemed to be going the wrong way. As we approached the south 5 knt mark Chris was stretching out a lead over the front single skis. We all did an quick remount and positioning didn't change, well Chris seemed to get further ahead. Back in my ski, my left leg had a burning sensation around my lower calf. I was thinking that it may have come in contact with the notorious Red Jelly. At the finish Paul H. confirmed he came in contact with a Jelly too. By this point Chris had a firm grasp on the place of first single ski, while Ty, Terry and myself had to duke it our for 2nd 3rd 4th. My interval training from the previous weekend paid off as I was able to step it up into 3rd gear for the finish.
Back in the pack Warren Bruce continued his march up the ranks, finishing not too far behind heavy hitters Jonathan Sy and Ken Stannick, but just ahead of Rod Hope. (which particularly pleases warren.) Warren, together with Chris D, are training hard to get ready for the US Surf Ski Championships in late August.
Young Fitzy, Cam, had his first race paddling his own surf ski. Cam completed the short course in a very respectable time.
Results are pretty wonky, people not marking down Short or Long Course, People not passing the south 5 knot can etc.
Next weeks race is the Maple Beach Multi-sport
2km paddle to Belcarra > 1.5 km run to Admiralty Point > 300m swim back to Maple Beach > run back to Belcarra > Paddle back to Deep Cove. A favourite amongst many of the Tuesday Night Veterans
