Race Commentary
Long Course: Roche Point, Maple Beach, and back. Short Course: Gray Rocks, Boulder and return
It was a very long to course to help the team of racers going to San Francisco for the US Surf Ski Champs. Daryl Remmler of Think Kayaks is assembling a large team of Deep Cove and other racers to go down and represent THINK. Rod Hope, Corky Armstrong, Chris Dobrovolny, Warren Bruce, Gareth Tudor-Jones, Daryl and myself will be spending a few days in San Fran getting used to the sea conditions. The USSSC has a new race route which features a long down wind section. It includes the notorious run out to Point Bonita before it turns downwind to Berkeley via Angel Island. About 24 km. Looking forward to it. There will be a Singles race on Saturday August 23 which you can follow live on www.surfski.info. Don't expect to see any of our names at the top as this event will attract some of the top surfski paddlers in the world. But keep an eye out for local flatwater stars Dion Maxwell, now racing for the US National Team and Wes Hammer who is on the Canadian Team. Both are from Maple Ridge.
Oceanman
There was a great turn out of Deep Cove racers at the Jericho Oceanman. As usual the race attracted a wide variety of athletes from the running, swimming and paddling world. Most did it as a relay, but Deep Cove Tuesday Night "Tough Guy" Ken Boxall went solo. As usual the post race festivities, Salmon BBQ and were great.
