Description: Boulder Island return via the Red Navigation light
Course Length: 5 km-ish
The fourth sunny Tuesday Night in a row. 80 Paddlers!!! North America's Largest Weekly Paddlesport Race
Again the race was graced by the presence of some avid paddlers who have dropped out for a bit. Big Stu Shearer was a weekly hard core racer in years gone by and this was his first race in a couple of years, and Dave Ross who has some major paddling accomplishments under his belt. Was it a third place in the 750 mile Yukon River Quest along with partner Ken Stanick? They teamed up tonight in the canoe that both swore they would never sit butt in again after some 50 hours of paddling. Not to mention all the training. Hope to see more of these guys.
The original race route posted was to go between Hamber Island and the mainland. But many people were concerned about the low tide. We changed the map ands most people saw it…some people didn't. The race started at a blistering pace and the front line was crowded. After rounding Boulder Island, it was evident there was a strong flooding current. As I approached the red light mark before Hamber Island, I was making more ground going sideways that I was forward. Had I not been paying attention I might have been slammed into the concrete footing by the strong cross current.
The leaders were having navigation issues of their own. It seems that Gareth…and Jeff were among the "ones" who didn't see the route change and Chris D. was among the "ones" who did see it. Chris was yelling, "where are you going?" Gareth and Jeff were still racing for the gap between Hamber I. and the mainland that was still dry from low tide. They had to make a U turn and lost some serious toime to chasers Bob (that's me) and Brian Sasha, closely tailed by John George. This, I am proud to say, is the only time in 11 years of Tuesday Nights that I have ever been in the lead! However briefly. I am quite positive that if Gareth had decided to portage the sand bar that 80 paddlers would have followed.
So when you read the results bare in mind that Gareth, Jeff, Chris D. Ty Gee Terry Lewis and Mike Fitz, put in a bit of extra mileage than Brian/Sasha and John George.
