Course Length: About 5.28 km
Race Commentary:
It was another awesome night for kayak racing, and another great turn out by keen kayak racers. So in the middle of the pack there are some great rivalries building for future races. That's what the Tuesday Night Race is all about. You can always find some at your level to compete against.
Recent returnees to the Tuesday Night Race scene after several years of raising kids are starting to heat up the mid-pack competition. Pat Johnson, has had several year hiatus from TNR. He is making TNR his weekly race event and will soon be pushing some of the TNR veterans. Sharon Robertson and Carolyn Hubbard are emerging from early childhood rearing to pursue surf ski racing. Sharon has her name on the Tour de Indian Arm Trophy and Carolyn is a veteran of several Round Bowen races. Last night both were both were closely pursuing World Kayak Marathon Championship participant Jen Zimmerman. Watch out Jen! Both Sharon and Carolyn haven't touched a paddle in several years and they will only get faster.
Rookie Warren Bruce showed no respect to Veterans Rod and Micky as he lead them across the finish line. John George made an appearance after injuring his shoulder. Hopefully he will build his way back into good form.
Marshall House and partner Curtis Brock finally made the maiden voyage of Marshal's new Fenn Mako XT double. Their combined forces wasn't enough to take Gary Cassulis who could paddle faster scared than they could angry...well maybe not angry, more determined.
Rivalries are what helps everybody improve. Your competitor will drive you to get that extra paddling session in during the week and to dig a little deeper at the finish line, and that's what happened to me when Pete Alfred pushing to pass me at the finish line and mean while I was pushing Ty Gee.
But the best battle captured on video and view by all at The Raven was Jeff Raymond getting schooled at the finish line by Frenchman Jean Rillard. I took great pleasure in watching Jeff being left in Rillard's dust mainly because Jeff has done this move on me many times. BTW I was much further back in the pack. Jean exploded away from Jeff with amazing acceleration with about 200m to the finish. Jean combined a very high cadence with solid technique and great power. Jeff has nothing to feel bad about however as Jean was an alternate for the French National Kayak Team for the Beijing Olympics. He's no slouch. What was also interesting was watching the rest of us slouches "sprinting" to the finish line in their wake. After watching Jean our sprints seemed...insignificant. But rather than being discouraged we should all take inspiration.
Upcoming Races:
Dan Harris Challenge - Bellingham, April 26
Tour De Indian Arm - Deep Cove, May 10
