Navigation is a skill that can make or break a trip. The first part of this lesson introduces the fundamental theories and skills of navigation, including the use of compasses, charts, tides & current tables, chart one, along with navigation terminology, piloting, and dead reckoning. In the second half of this lesson the theories learned will be put to use and expanded upon. We will practice piloting, dead reckoning, using ranges, navigation aids, charts and compass, and experience the important differences between land-based navigation and navigating from the cockpit of a kayak. Students will leave this lesson with the knowledge and skills needed to plan and execute a successful trip on the BC coast.
This course takes place at Whytecliff Park in West Vancouver. Participants will be asked to meet at the park in the main parking lot at 9:00am. Transportation of kayaks and gear can be arranged.
