July 30th Results

The 8 km Race Route went south to Grey Rocks Island, Boulder Island, returned north to Hamber, rounded Jug Island to return to Deep Cove.

Paddlers faced a strong head wind and current heading south to Grey Rocks as the pack of 90 racers splintered into several smaller groups. Rounding Boulder Island to head North back up Indian Arm, the leaders took a chance and tried to run the gap between Hamber Island and Turtle Head. At high tide this pass is navigatable but at low tide Hamber is connected by a thin strip of land. Unfortunately the strip was barely covered and most people had to make a 10 foot portage.

Boat wake made for rough water between Hamber and Jug and a stiff headwind pick-up for the return run to Deep Cove.

Racers have been assigned one of the following categories: Canoe (C), Double Kayak (DK), Fast Sea Kayak (FSK), High Performance Kayak (HPK), Plastic Kayaks (PK), and Sea Kayak (SK). For information on the classification system click here.
