May 15th Results

Paddle Section: 3 km

The night was threatening rain but still many hardy racers showed up. Charles Brooks from Brooks Wetsuits took a break from ripping up golf courses on his dirt bike to see what the real kayakers do to train. One day he may be brave enough to come and race. Dave from Necky Kayaks made another appearance taking the Mighty Phantom for its maiden race. I think he is hooked on the Tuesday Nite Races. After warming up on the water we called everybody ashore to start the race with a 5-minute run. 80 racers lined up at the start line and it was a sprint to the woods where the single track started. Foot wear ranged from sandles, neoprene socks, booties and running shoes. The trail was festooned with pointy rocks, slimy roots, and mud. Paul German made great time up the hill with Kevin Vallely providing the loving touch on the tush. People loved it. Launching from the beach was interesting with a logjam of kayaks created by Denis and Cheryl who launched backward and formed a blockade while turning. The weather was getting serious with darkening skies and seas.

Christian Fournier made a remarkable recovery when he was almost bucked off his Speedster. I jinxed the Howeller with a comment about being home free after rounding the can for the last time. The choppy seas proved too much for him on his new surf skis. Ben Fast (even with his 1 remaining good eye) put in a good time in his double baidarka slightly edging Mike Cabigon who moving up in the rankings. Zoltan test-drove a wing blade Descente Paddle and boy was he cooking.

Next week we will be implementing a new system of categorizing boats. We will be using a system which categorizes kayaks according to length and width.
