June 26th Results

Paddle Section: 7 km

The last race of June 2001 turned out an incredible field of racers; there must have been over 100 paddlers lining up at the start. New faces are turning up to every race now, and familiar faces are looking fitter, and paddling faster all the time.

Joel had to yell the race instructions twice to make sure everyone was thoroughly confused, and John shot some great video footage of folks scratching their heads before the horn went off, luckily Joel sounded the horn quickly before people started asking him to repeat instructions again!

Off the start it was Speedsters and Terry Lewis to the front of the pack. A train of 8 Speedsters headed for Lone Rock Pt. Matt, Bob, Paul and Ken splintered of the front as Sam in an effort to catch Terry upped the speed and tried to shake Greg, Jerome and Christian.

Robin, Michelle Wendy and Cam pulled off flawless mid-pack starts, avoiding everything but the Barge (No they actually missed that too) Kira, Julie and Carolyn were making it look way too easy, while Glen, Steve, and David were busy pushing water uphill in valiant efforts to get those plastic boats planing! Meanwhile Terry was playing Coach boat antics by ducking around the back of the pack and hammering up the inside. Sam was struggling to shake off Jerome, and Matt was too busy dreaming up a new helmet to worry about who was behind, or in front of him. Team AIC were doubling-up a storm, and Dave was cruising way ahead in his Looksha. The most incredible performance of the day must go to that crazy nut Paul, in his beat-up, rudderless, Down river boat - No one would have believed how fast Paul circled the 5 Km buoy if it hadn't been on Video. He dropped three surfskiis going around that Buoy, and lead the second pack all the way to the finish. Awesome effort Paul! Matt Kelly also should his boat handling skills by pulling of a beautiful lean turn allowing him to cut inside Bob while rounding the 5 km can

Folks are gearing up for the big Deep Cove Marathon this Saturday, and its looking like there will be a big turnout for the event this year. Weather is sure to be hot, and racers will be fighting uphill on a turning tide, so its going to be "survival of the fittest" out there this weekend. I am betting on a very exciting race this year. The question is; who will have the stamina to grind hard for the entire 17 Km and be able to hang on to the lead for the finish? Best of luck Racers!

Racers have been assigned one of the following categories: Canoe, Double Kayak (DK), Fast Sea Kayak (FSK), High Performance Kayak (HPK), Plastic Kayaks (PK), and Sea Kayak (SK). For information on the classification system click here.
