The Tourists were scratching their heads and asking, " Why do these crazy Canadians insist on jogging through the forest with a Canoe on their heads?, They must be very hardy indeed!" (They didn't say foolhardy Tom, and best wishes for a speedy recovery from that groin, shoulder, and back pull!)
Who was that crazy kook in the New Zealand boat yelling at the guys in the back of the pack - me. Man I never realized that Terry had such a loud voice until he screamed "Pat stop your lily dipping and start pulling, this is a race and Jerome is going to be waiting on the beach with a rock in his hand when you finally get to Belcarra!" Well terry, he didn't have a rock, it was a big stick…
What an epic, what a race, what a night, and what a dumb way to gather up a thirst for beers…
Chris and Ken took home the honors by soundly trouncing Bob, Joel, Darryl, and Christian - nice work guys. Another "holy smokes" effort by Damian George in his canoe - this guy flies when he decides to drop the hammer!
The race was a grueling one this week. Folks had to team up to complete the event: Team members had to navigate some pretty rough waters last night with the tide change and stiff wind stirring up an ugly chop. The race consisted of one team member paddling to Belcarra, and the other to the beach in front of Jug Island. By the way in case there was any debate about which outward leg was harder… the Balcarra run was waaaay tougher than the Jug run!
The next step was to run the 5km stretch of steep trail up the mountain and down the other side, only to be greeted by a mandatory jump into the toasty Caribbean-like waters of Indian Arm and swim to Jug Island and back. Then it was jump into your teammate's boat and race like mad for home. But wait! Since this was a team event, the fastest partner had to wait at the 5KM buoy just before the finish and wait for her partner to catch up before they could both cross the finish line together. Made for some interesting heroics, and all kinds of great heated conversations once the slower partner finally caught up. After that, it was just a matter of hightailing it for the finish line together and prying oneself out of an unfamiliar boat.
Next week, the Race of Truth -- We will finally have revenge on those pansy ass Speedsters and their funny looking paddles - Let the real racing begin!
