The Great Kayak Swap
(a race not a sale)

Racers were to have a partner boat the same as theirs. The teams were to split with one half paddling to Jug Island Beach and the other half paddling to Belcarra Park. The Belcarra half would jump out of their kayak and run the 20 - 30 minute trail to Jug Island. Once arriving there they would swim to Jug Island and back, jumping into their partners boat and paddle back to the 5 knot can. Their partners would do the reverse.

Racers were busting with curiosity regarding the course format. Brian Green and Greg Inkster made the start by the hair of their chinny chin chin. Racers jockyed for position. As the mob split into 2 different direction, it looked like Moses was standing in front of the pack and doing his thing. With Jeff Teachman in my boat we made good time to the beach and arrived behind Nancy Dassie and just ahead of Babe. The swim was refreshing, this was my chance to maybe catch Matt Kelly and stay ahead of my partner Jeff Teachman who I knew would have no problem catching me on the run. Babe Carel blew by me in the swim. I was sure she had flippers on. I even looked for a pair in her kayak but she must have had them well hidden. The picnicers on the beach had a look of fear in their eyes at the site of 30 kayaks heading full steam in their direction. Having never walked or run this trail I was shocked at the steepness of ascent. This would seperate the paddlers from the runners. Andrew Dunphy and a succession of truly fit runners took no time in making up the marginal advantage I had. They were moving! Arriving at the crest of the super steep hill for the northbound runners it seemed like they had the tougher run. But being sea level to sea level it had to be the same elevation gain. People were commenting on me running in my Teva Sandals, but they were great! One guy ran the course bare foot!!!!

Matt Kelly caught me entering Belcarra park. From there we tried to one up each other down to the beach. I think we passed each other 4 times. Muttering under our breaths "Your not beating me". Daryl Remmler and Christian Fournier said they swam through a pack of angry stinging jelly fish. And a huge motorboat decided it had to drive through the middle of the swimmers.

Congratulations to Every body who participated!
